The Department of Anatomy, KIMS is situated at Banashankari 2nd stage, Bangalore, in the First floor of the college building. The Department has nine teaching staff members, twelve postgraduate students and about fifteen non teaching staff. It has a spacious Dissection hall with the capacity to accommodate 250 students and a Histology laboratory with required number of Microscopes and a capacity to accomodate 100 students. There is a well equipped Post Graduate histology lab to carry out the staining procedures and to prepare the slides for teaching as well as research purposes. The Department has an excellent museum where the dissected specimens, embryology models, osteology embryology and comparative anatomy specimens and also anthropometry instruments are displayed. There is a Department Library with all the required latest edition Anatomy books as well as reference books related to the subject. Various state, national and international journals are also available. There are demonstration class rooms for teaching small batches. A good spacious gallery class room is available for conducting theory classes with facilities of various teaching methods like black board, OHP and LCD projectors.

    Department of Physiology is located at the second floor of the Pre clinical block of college campus at Banashankari II stage. It is spread over an area of 18,000 sq.ft with spacious and well equipped laboratories. The department has 14 faculty including 9 faculties with PG qualification who have completed their post graduation from various other institutions. This has helped the department to progress with the expertise of staff exposed to different learning atmospheres. There are 6 PG guides in the department to impart excellent training to Post Graduates. The department imparts training to 150 MBBS students and 2 MD students every year. Apart from these training is also provided to UG & PG Dental, Physiotherapy & Nursing students. Discipline is a priority and is strictly enforced by the entire faculty in the department. Students are monitored regularly for their attendance and performance in periodic assessments. Parents are intimated regarding the progress of their wards regularly. Below average students are identified at a very early stage and mentoring is done for them. To enrich the knowledge and bring about competitive spirit among students, National & state level Quiz & CMEs are conducted every year for Under Graduate & Post Graduate students. A perfect combination of experienced faculty and good infra structure provides an ideal learning experience to the young aspiring doctors.

    Biochemistry department has full fledge staff including nine teaching staff and twenty one nonteaching staff both in college and hospital campus. The department has spacious undergraduate laboratory, well equipped post graduate laboratory, departmental library, seminar hall, demonstration halls and staff rooms as per MCI standards for 150 MBBS admissions. Clinical Biochemistry, a part of central laboratory is situated in KIMS hospital complex. The clinical laboratory is well equipped with the state of the art auto-analyzers, electrolyte analyzers and ABG analyzers for performing all the routine Biochemistry, endocrinology immunology and emergency investigations. The staff consists of 1 Professor and HOD, 6 Associate Professors, 2 Assistant Professors and 6 PG cum tutors in the department. Teachers have undergone training in Medical Education Technology (MET) under MCI. The department has Post Graduate (MD) seats since 1999 which is MCI recognized, with an intake of 2 students per year and so far 22 students have successfully completed the course. The department also has RGUHS affiliated PhD programmes and so far 3 students have successfully completed their PhD. The department conducts regular tutorials, tests, seminars, CME programmes as stipulated by RGUHS and fulfilling MCI norms. There are total of 15 publications in the last three years. Research activities are going on in the field of PCOS, obesity, cataractogenesis and depression cases.

    The Department of Pharmacology located in the 3rd floor of the Preclinical Block with a total floor area of 18000 sq ft. It is well equipped with seminar halls, lecture halls, demonstration halls, practical halls, department library with modern audiovisual aids and adequate number of books and journals with Internet facilities. The department has a well organized museum displaying herbal drug specimens the chart exhibits with a section on “History of Medicine.” The department also has a well maintained animal house with adequate breeding facilities for laboratory animals.

    The department also runs a Clinical Pharmacology Unit in KIMS Hospital for drug information services, clinical trial operations, adverse drug monitoring and Pharmacovigilance activities.

    The department regularly organizes workshops and training programmes in good clinical practice and drug awareness programmes for clinicians and practitioners.

    The department has sufficient number of senior and experienced faculty members with good academic credentials imparting quality teaching and engaged in research activities.

    The department also runs MD Pharmacology course with 6 annual admissions.

    A fully licensed sophisticated active blood bank is also the pride of the department.Department of pathology started in the year 1981 has grown gradually and is now well established. It has experienced enthausiastic and inspiring qualified teaching faculty, creating an interesting and friendly learning atmosphere. The pathology department has two spacious, well lit and ventilated, equipped practical halls, seminar hall, demonstration room and museum. The practical hall can accommodate about 80 students. Rare and classical specimens received at the department have been archived with system wise categorization at the museum in the department.

    The learning material is abundant in the form of specimen, slides, charts, latest books, CD and high quality demonstration microscopes.

    The Department of Microbiology is situated in Banashankari campus of Kempegowda Institute of Medical college. It is actively involved in academics, diagnostics and research activities. The Diagnostic laboratory is located at KIMSH & RC as the part of the clinical laboratory. The Department is proud of nurtured , skilled and dedicated work force offering routine, specialized and advanced diagnostic services. Qualified and experienced team of six faculty members drive the medical education programmes imparting knowledge to undergraduate and postgraduate students. The department is well equipped with instruments like BACTEC BD 9050, Biosafety cabinets , Deep freezers(-80) & (-20), Lyophilizer(Delvec), Carbondioxide incubators, Cobas 6000 The department has five MD seats per year and is privileged to be recognized as PhD centre by RGUHS, Bangalore. As a part of the curriculum the department conducts regular tutorials for the UG students to make them gain confidence to face the university exams . Active PG teaching in the department includes regular subject seminar, Journal club and culture skills along with hands on training. The department has more than 24 publications in National & International indexed journals to its credit. We are also involved in research programmes with grants being approved by national and international agencies and with special focus in the area of Tuberculosis, HIV, Pneumococcal diseases, Dengue, Malaria and Molecular biology. The faculty members are resourse persons for national and International organizations like KSAPS, NACO, KHPT etc. These research activities help to serve the needy and contribute to competencies of staff in academic and diagnostics.

    The subject of Forensic Medicine and Toxicology is taught for III, IV and Vth term students during their II MBBS course. The department is situated in the college premises at Banashankari. The department is having well equipped practical hall, demonstration hall, research laboratory, museum, departmental library and seminar hall. The medico legal works will be conducted at Mortuary which is situated in KIMS hospital at VV Puram, Bangalore. The Mortuary has three autopsy tables with necessary postmortem instruments. The mortuary has cold storage facility to accommodate seven dead bodies. The syllabus taught is in accordance with the syllabus prescribed by Rajiv Gandhi University of Health Sciences and Medical Council of India. The students are taught regarding Medical law and ethics, Death and its changes, Asphyxial deaths, Injuries, Sexual Offences and related issues, Forensic Psychiatry and other topics of medico legal importance. They are also taught Toxicology – common poisons- its signs and symptoms, investigations, treatment and postmortem findings. Undergraduate students are posted to Mortuary for 15 days during which they will be shown procedure to conduct post mortems, examination of infant deaths, examination of rape victim and accused individuals and other medico legal cases. They will also learn to examine skeletal remains and issuing of various types of medical certificates. Post graduate students assist in conducting all the post mortems. They are also actively involved in age estimation, examination of victim and accused in cases of sexual offences, examination of skeletal remains etc. Seminars, Journal clubs, Post mortem review meetings are conducted regularly to train the post graduate students. Post graduate students involve actively in the teaching programme of under graduates like conducting theory classes, practical classes and tutorials. Post graduate students accompany the teaching staff members to the various courts in and around Bangalore and equip themselves in the court procedures.

    The Department of Community Medicine is one of the Para-clinical Departments of Kempegowda Institute of Medical Sciences (KIMS), a private medical college recognized by the Medical Council of India, New Delhi and is affiliated to the Rajiv Gandhi University of Health Sciences, Bangalore, Karnataka State, India. It was established on 1st April, 1981. The objective of this Department is to provide a high quality training in Community Medicine to the under graduate medical students enrolled for MBBS (basic medical degree) and post graduate medical students enrolled for MD (Community Medicine). The other activities of the Department are to conduct basic research, conduct training programs and to provide promotive, preventive and curative health services to the community, for the health and welfare of the people.

    The department is headed by a Professor who reports to the Principal of KIMS. The department consists of both teaching and non-teaching staff as stipulated by the Medical Council of India. It is governed by the Governing Council of KIMS College run by the Vokkaligara Sangha, a registered Society established for the welfare of the Vokkaliga Community.

    Postgraduate course in Community Medicine was started in the year 1993. This is a comprehensive, full time, 3 year training course leading on to the award of MD degree in Community Medicine. This MD course is recognized by Medical Council of India. Currently this degree is awarded by Rajiv Gandhi University of Health Sciences.

    From the HOD’s Desk

    Our department is active in academics and also has a decent workload to enable adequate surgical exposure and experience for post graduates. Almost all the staff have publications to their credit. As far as the undergraduates are concerned there is now a focus on early exposure in the 3rd term to practical procedures such as suture removal, removal of Foleys catheter, dressings of wounds and the concept of asepsis especially hand sterilization. Post graduate training emphasizes on surgical principles and a sound knowledge of surgical anatomy pertaining to the relevant surgical procedure. Much emphasis is placed upon basic sciences including physiology. From the legal angle workshops have been and are being conducted to expose and create awareness of legal responsibilities in so far as clear communication and legal documentation of informed consent as well as proper and systematic case sheet entry and maintenance of records. Surgical skills development workshops are in place for 1st year post graduates to enable efficient suturing techniques and eventually graded acquisition of CVP line insertion,CPR,Endotracheal intubation,FAST. So that these skills are acquired in the first year of post graduation. Post graduates are also exposed to palliative humane treatment of terminal cancer patients. Clinical skills are developed to the extent where clinical diagnosis is assisted by necessary relevant investigations to confirm the clinical diagnosis rather than vice versa.

    The end result should be a confident post graduate with skills and surgical principles to manage competently varieties of surgical patients with minimal morbidity and mortality.

    Department of ENT in Kempegowda institute of medical sciences adheres to the requirements of the MCI with adequate facilities for both undergraduate and post graduate teaching programs . At present there are 2 MS and 1 DLO seats and 150 undergraduate seats- MCI recognized . On an average, 1000 major and 1200 minor surgeries are performed every year with daily outpatients of 180-200. A fully equipped Audiology unit which includes Audiometry, Impedance, Otoacoustic emission, BERA and Speech therapy is available. The post graduates are guided and encouraged to do research works, Paper/Poster presentations in State, Zonal and National conferences and attend workshops /CME’s. On rotation basis post graduates are also posted to other prestigious institutions – KIDWAI memorial institute of Oncology (Head &Neck surgery), NIMHANS (Neurosurgery and Speech & hearing) and Rajiv Gandhi Institute of TB and Chest diseases. Postgraduates attend rural health camps which are conducted by the hospital once a month. They provide primary health care to rural population and if further treatment is needed they are referred to the Hospital. The department is well equipped with latest equipments for all types of surgeries.CME’s , Hands-on workshops and Conferences are conducted regularly by the department.

    The Department of Anaesthesiology and Critical Care laid its foundation way back in 1981 in Kempegowda Institute of Medical Sciences and Research Centre, Bangalore. The inception of Postgraduate courses in Anaesthesiology was in the year 1998. The Department is situated in the 4th floor of the hospital comprising of 21 Major and 11 Minor Operation Theatres with well equipped Preoperative and Postoperative Care Units. Our Department is providing comprehensive Anaesthesia Care to various clinical departments which include General Surgery, Orthopaedics, Obstetrics and Gynaecology, Ophthalmology and Otorhinolaryngology. We have also extended our services to Superspeciality Departments which include Neurosurgery, Paediatric Surgery, Plastic Surgery, Urology, Surgical Gastroenterology, Cardiothoracic Surgery and Oro-maxillo-facial Surgery. Anaesthesia care is also provided to MRI and CT rooms and other ambulatory anaesthesia procedures. The Department also caters to the various ICUs which are well equipped with ventilators, multi-parameter patient monitors and renal replacement therapy.

    The department was started in the year 1985. Postgraduate course was started in the year 2006. At present, the Department has 3 MD seats per year. The department acts a nodal centre for the anti-retroviral therapy which is given free of cost to the HIV afflicted patients. Department conducts Regional and National conferences. The department has organized South Zone laser Conference in April 2009. Live workshop cum CME on various Cosmetology procedures was conducted in Feb 2014. Department observes Vitiligo day, Lupus awareness day every year where we call patients and educate them about their disease condition and distribute umbrella etc. We conduct yearly Bangalore Dermatological Society Meet where Postgraduate students present rare cases and research programmes undertaken in department. Department actively participates in Health Camps arranged by NGOs and Bangalore Dermatological Society viz. Camp attended by Staff Members and PG’s at Madhugiri and Camp conducted at Central Jail, Bangalore. Postgraduates have come with flying colors in quizzes conducted at National level. They present papers, rare cases and studies regarding newer drugs at State and National Level. Postgraduates under the guidance of faculty regularly do publication in indexed journals. Dr Ankur Talwar has got gold medal in the year 2010 postgraduate examination in dermatology held by RGUHS. Department conducts Speciality Clinics regularly viz. on MONDAY PIGMENTARY DISORDERS TUESDAY PSORIASIS CLINIC WEDNESDAY HAIR AND NAIL CLINIC THURSDAY SKIN ALLERGY CLINIC FRIDAY COSMETOLOGY CLINIC DAILY ART CLINIC.

    Department is equipped with latest US FDA approved Davlin Phototherapy Unit, Brymill (USA) Cryogenic system and Ellman Radiofrequency UNIT. Department has spacious well equipped seminar room and library with all the latest Books, Colour Atlases and International Journals on Dermatology, Venereology and Leprosy. Academic activities conducted regularly in department are seminars, journal club, subject symposium, bed sides, histopathology demonstrations etc.

    Department of Radiodiagnosis is one of the busy departments in the teaching hospital sector of Bangalore. Department examines about 9500 x-rays per month. Ultrasound department is very busy with turnover of about 150 cases per day. Our CT ( 16 Slice) & MR( 1.5 Tesla) section is also catering round the clock with 850 CTs & 720 MRIs per month. We have Digital Mammography machine with about 115 cases per month. Department is having very active teaching schedule for the Postgraduates which covers an exhaustive work. We have a Library, Museum & seminar hall. Our department services are available round the clock.

    The department of psychiatry came into existence in the year 1991. After the initiation of a full fledged psychiatric unit with inpatient and outpatient facilities, the post graduate program (M.D.) in psychiatry was started in the year 1998. Till date eight postgraduates have completed their training in the department. Stalwarts in the horizon of Indian psychiatry have headed the department over the years. The department has evolved under the guidance of Dr. C. Shamasunder, Dr. A. Jagadeesh, Dr.N. Janakiramaiah. Dr. C.N.Krishnamurthy, and is currently headed by Dr.R.Raguram.

    Dr. R.Raguram has worked as Professor of Psychiatry in NIMHANS, for over three decades. He was invited by the Government of UAE to initiate a postgraduate residency program in the country for the first time. Having accomplished this task, he joined the department in 2006.He is a well known teacher and a respected researcher in the field of psychiatry. Currently, he officiates as an invited member in the board of governors of the World Association of Cultural Psychiatry.

Our research goals are to develop a deeper understanding of the causes of psychiatric illness, and to create more effective diagnostic, treatment, and prevention strategies for these disorders. We also aim to advance the understanding of psychiatric aspects of medical illnesses. Our clinical mission will integrate state-of-the-art biological, psychological, and social approaches in the care of our patients and their families, as it provides the foundation for our teaching and research missions. In all of the above activities, we shall adhere to the highest ethical standards as we strive to enhance the quality of care for psychological ailments.

    Department of pulmonary medicine provides care for all patients with respiratory diseases. Diseases like Acute bronchitis, Pneumonia, Tuberculosis, Lung abscess, Pyothorax, Pleural effusion, Asthma, COPD, Interstitial lung diseases, Respiratory failure, Sleep disorders, Lung cancer, Auto immune lung diseases etc…
